One of the original counties of California when California achieved statehood in 1850, Shasta County is nearly 4,000 square miles of land and 62 square miles of water in northern California. It includes the northernmost portion of the Sacramento Valley and reaches into the Cascade Mountain Range.
The county’s population is around 177,000 (for a population density of just 43 people per square mile), and Redding is its county seat. Redding is a popular Destination Location, as well as a base for expeditions to Lassen Volcanic National Park, an easy 50 miles to the east.
